Published by Labor Management Institute, Inc., the PSS™ Annual Survey of Hours Report© is the first national hospital workforce benchmark developed for nursing by nurses in 1989. Now in its 36th year.
The survey includes unit‑specific direct, indirect, and total worked hours of care, caregiver‑to‑patient ratios. Covering 95 unit types across 13 service lines, the report represents teaching, community, and rural hospitals nationwide.
The survey provides multi‑year comparisons of 170 workforce management metrics, including overtime, agency and traveler usage, staffing office and float pool utilization, time‑to‑fill RN positions, and key operational indicators such as average length of stay and cost per inpatient day.
